Dr. Lane Norton Tracy, husband of Athena Leonudakis Tracy and father of Diana Maria Tracy (Raleigh, NC), Andrea Georgina Tracy (Crete, Greece) and Mark Stanley Tracy (Wake Forest, NC, married to Ebony Latifah Tracy), passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 13, 2026, at the age of 91.
He has been deeply missed by family and friends for several years due to dementia, which changed him dramatically, but not always in a negative way.
Lane was a genius, it is quite safe to say. He was a man of many talents, who worked hard at all of them, knowing that practice is the key to excellence. He was a teacher, a writer, a singer, an actor, a golfer, a composer, a bridge player, a marathon runner, and a parent. That last role was the one he most treasured.
He had a deep interest in his children and grandchildren - Zari Ife Tracy (27 - Charlotte, NC), Emma Johanna Little (26 - Raleigh, NC), Myles Lane Tracy (25 - Chicago, IL), Caelan Tracy Duncan (22 - Raleigh, NC), Benjamin Douglas Little (22- Raleigh, NC). He was a trusted and generous advisor to Diana, Andrea, and Mark, and a true and loving companion to Athena. They travelled the world together, to nearly every continent, spending months and years living abroad.
He was a natural philosopher and Unitarian Universalist, deeply committed to a life of service, justice, and reverence for humanity, the earth, the cosmos, and all as aspects of the divine. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia and a social worker.
As a college professor, he was a leader in the field of Living Systems organizational behavior theory, publishing several books and lecturing internationally. He helped bridge the gap between human organizations and the natural principles of living systems. He viewed organizations as dynamic, interconnected systems capable of growth, adaptation, and renewal. Through his writing, he offered a more human-centered vision of leadership, one rooted in understanding relationships, communication, and the complexity of life within organizations.
In retirement, he was a Guardian ad Litem for CASA and turned his talents towards poetry and music composition. His “Missa Natura” was performed by the UUFR choir in 2014. It was an incredibly difficult work to perform, but also fun, silly, joyful and beautiful. Sample lyric from the song Evolution: “We can wiggle, we can squirt, we can crawl the ocean floor.”
He was able to accept where he was and what was happening to him in an inspiring way. Even dementia was just another step in his natural journey, and he actually seemed to enjoy the regression to childhood in some ways. He must have been a delightful little boy because the smiles he greeted everyone with made him a favorite at Waltonwood, his retirement community. He carried his love for life’s joys until they were no longer within reach. In the end, he exercised his final act of autonomy, meeting his passing with a strength of character that was a testament to how he lived.
He will be laid to rest at Pine Forest Burial Society in Wake Forest, NC on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at 2:00 PM, continuing his natural journey and feeding the earth. Family and friends are welcome to join us. In lieu of flowers, bringing native plants or bulbs to plant on the gravesite would be welcomed, or a donation to your local CASA/GAL Chapter (https://nationalcasagal.org/).
A memorial service is being planned to celebrate his life and works.
