Len graduated from Lorain High School in 1950 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Akron in 1956. His life reflected steady purpose and careful attention to the world around him—qualities that were evident both in his work and in the way he treated others with quiet consideration.
A veteran of the US Army, Len also built a professional life marked by integrity and service. Registered in Ohio as both a Professional Engineer and Surveyor, he worked in public service and as a consulting engineer. In every role, he was known for a gentle manner and a thoughtful approach, offering kindness not as a gesture, but as a consistent way of being.
Len is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Jean Harris Mercer; sons, John Leonard Mercer, and Adam Thomas Mercer; grandson, Ian Jonathan Mercer; and sister and brother-in-law, Lucy Jane and Joseph A. Barto.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
