Sunny retired in 1990 as executive director of the North Carolina Association of Launderers & Cleaners and was predeceased by her 1st husband Wendell Newton Smith, the executive director of the North Carolina Association of Launderers & Cleaners at his time of death in October 1997.
Her second husband Alvah W. Houchins from Richmond, VA died January 2010.
Sunny's survivors include her daughters, Susan Smith Johnson and Carol Smith Boykin (late husband Ronald Boykin), stepdaughter Patricia Smith Leopard (late husband John Leopard) and grandchildren, Nicholas Richard Wendell Johnson, and James Ronald Boykin, Jr. as well as step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Sunny requested no funeral, her ashes will be in the loving care of her daughters.
