Margaret Jane Moore (Peggy) Remembered by Keith & Mary Ann Moore January 2024
Col. Fredrick L. Moore wife and Lois were a career AirForce family and moved about every two years. Mom and Dad and had been raised on an orange ranch. Their home base and relatives lived in Fillmore, California. They were married in 1938. Keith was born in 1939 and Larry was born in 1941. Margaret (named after Mom’s best friend) was born on February 22, 1947, at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Alabama.
Only Mom called her Margaret. Dad, Larry and I called her Peggy. Due to our significant differences in age, I was not a part of or fully aware of Margaret's interest and school activities.
Our Families Timeline:
1947 to Aug 1950) Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. Dad was now a Colonel in the Air Force and attending the Air Command and Staff College. In summer, we made the long trip to Southern California to visit with relatives and enjoy the families beach cabin on Rincon Beach.
1950 to 1952: Fillmore, CA: At the start of the Korean War, Dad was assigned to Tokyo, Japan. Dad bought a house in Fillmore, CA. so Mom, Peggy, Larry and I could be with our relatives while he was overseas.
1952 to 1954: Tokyo, Japan: Dad received permission for the family to join him in Tokyo. Mom, Peggy, Larry and I left San Francisco under the Golden Gate Bridge for the long ocean trip to Yokohama, Japan. I still vividly recall our arrival in the harbor to a very cold black and white old village of wood buildings and streets incased in snow! Our Family moved into a large two-story house in outer Tokyo surrounded by local Japanese families, (Owned by a Japanese General with a Japanese Tea House and two girl-sons to clean and cook). My brother and I would crack up when listening to the twang and songs played by neighbors on their two string Hama-sin guitar. At that time Japan was under occupation by the US, and my brother and I were bussed to school. When the occupation ended, we moved to the Military Air Base nearby. Peggy loved playing in the Tea House, the one thing she missed most when we moved.
1954 to 1956 – Andrews AirForce Base, Maryland.
1956 to 1959 – Arlington, VA: Dad was assigned to the Pentagon. Dad built a house on a hillside with a very large oak tree. Peggy was very happy to have her own new bedroom. Mom let her pick out her furnishing and the room colors. Larry and I attended Washington Lee High School.
1959 to 1960 - Fontainebleau, France: Dad was assigned to NATO as an Air Force representative. Peggy loved France, living with them in on the edge of a small village in a ancient three-story stone chateau.
1960 to 1968 - Eglin Air Force Base – Pensacola, Florida: Peggy attended Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. She then attended Stevens College for two years and graduated from the University of Florida in 1968. After graduating from UF, Peggy married Gary.
Dad retired after 30 years in the Air Force.
1968 - Goleta (Santa Barbara), CA: After retiring, Dad bought a house on a hill in Goleta. When Gary was in Vietnam, Peggy and Scott lived with them in S.B. Peggy worked at the Collage Hospital until Gary came home.
Peggy always felt lucky that Dad was a ham-radio operator; he could connect with Gary and their loved ones on the other side of the world ………anytime.
Mom was truly thrilled when they were living with her …smiles….smiles…smiles
And now she has her Baby Home!
