Marian was born to Lucy Mildred (Glover) and Julius Brodie Breeland in Batesburg, South Carolina on October 1, 1920. By God’s grace, Marian peacefully breathed her last and was welcomed into heaven on March 18, 2024 at the age of 103.
She was preceded in death by her husband Colonel Michael Mosteller Sr. (USMC) and daughter Patricia Johnson; her brother Julius Brodie Breeland, Jr., her brother Samuel Glover Breeland, and her sister Mary Jean Breeland.
She is survived by her son Michael Mosteller Jr., his wife Janis, and her grandchildren Corrie Bitsas, Mary Tennant, Esther Futrell, Anne Mosteller; her son-in-law Sam Johnson and her grandchildren Drew Johnson, Amy Turnblazer, and Tori Burnett.
“Grandmother Mosteller” was blessed with twenty great-grandchildren before her passing. The great-grandchildren are as follows: Sam, Hampton, and Land of Drew (and Elizabeth) Johnson; Will and Ellie of Amy (and Jason) Turnblazer; Charlie, Lucy, Meg, and Hope of Tori (and Charles) Burnett; John, Michael, and Anna Claire of Corrie (and John) Bitsas; Bonnie and Elijah of Mary (and Ben) Tennant; Liam, Everett, Joanna, Sydney, Othelia, and Orestes of Esther (and Jonathan) Futrell.
Marian grew up in both Batesburg and Aiken, South Carolina. She met Mike while working in Charleston, SC. They were married in the Citadel Chapel on October 24, 1942. Shortly after, Mike left to serve with the Marine Corps in the Pacific during WWII, which separated them for 3years. After the war, Mike continued to serve in the Marine Corps for many more years with Marian at his side. His assignments took them to places across America and the world where she served in various roles and leadership capacities. After Mike completed his military service, they settled in Falls Church, Virginia. Marian was a devoted wife and loving mom to their two children, Patricia Kay (Pat) and Michael Jr. (Mike). Marian and Mike shared a total 67 years in love and life together until he breathed his last in the year 2010. Marian spent her remaining years in Cary, NC, allowing for the close companionship and faithful care of Mike and Pat.
Marian’s appreciation of art and beauty had many expressions throughout her life. She enjoyed traveling the world with Mike, curating fine art and collectibles alongside their experiences. She had an eye for color and was full of artistic talents. She was an accomplished fine china painter. She was an exceptional hostess who could set a beautiful table, artfully arrange flowers, prepare delicious food, and bring joy and laughter to the gathering too. She was an avid reader and an astute crossword puzzle solver. She enjoyed golf, bridge, and dinner parties with friends.
A celebration of Marian’s life and legacy will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 2:00PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, North Carolina. Her remains will be interred in Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, Virginia, alongside those of her loving husband, Colonel Michael Mosteller.
