

Marj Garrity of Cary, NC died Sunday, October 31, 2010 at UNC Memorial Hospital with family members at her side. She was born in 1926 in Adair, Iowa. In 1965, she and her husband, Mike Garrity moved their family from Minnesota to Cary. Marj was a devoted wife and mother of eight children. She was an avid sports fan especially when it came to watching events that involved her children and grandchildren. Marj was a dedicated “tail-gater” at NC State games. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and participated in various community activities.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, L.M. “Mike” Garrity, along with her parents, Leo and Ann Hickey.
Marj is survived by her children: Judy Bang and husband, Wil of Cary, their children, Leah Bang, of Raleigh, Holly Bang Vogelsberg and husband, Cliff, their daughters, Carson and Maslan of Raleigh, Josh Bang of Cary, Sarah Bang Roberts and husband, Geoff and son, Braylon of Raleigh; Terry Hartsfield and husband, Johnny of Raleigh and their children, Drew Hartsfield and wife Chrissy and their daughter, Dylan of Raleigh, Christin Leigh Hartsfield of Atlanta; Tom Garrity and wife, Jeanne of Apex, and their daughters, Katie Garrity Pollard and husband Mitch of Cary, Maggie Garrity of Apex; Tim Garrity and wife, Deryl of Wake Forest, and their sons, Patrick Garrity of Raleigh and Colin Garrity of Wake Forest; Kathy Lucas and husband, Stan of Apex and their children, Jon Lucas of Cornelius, NC and Jaclyn Lucas of Cary; John Garrity and wife, Lisa of Cary and their children, Justin Garrity of Wilmington and Blakely Garrity of Boone, NC; Michelle Derrick and husband, Dirk of Conway, SC and their children, Dakota Derrick of Greeneville, SC and Peyton Derrick of Conway, SC; Jimmy Garrity and wife, Jenny of Wilmington and their children, Kacey, Corey and Carly of Wilmington.
Also surviving are her twin sister, Madeline Burnell of Jefferson, IA and younger sister, Veronica Wagner of Rochester, MN.
Mass will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary, on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. There will be a private family burial later at Oakwood Mausoleum in Raleigh, NC.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary.
