Marlene Ann "Cookie" Althiser

February 13, 1938September 4, 2012

Our hearts are saddened at the loss of such an amazing woman, but at the same time joyous that she has begun a new life without pain, disease or suffering. Marlene "Cookie" Althiser was most recently hospitalized with complications from Acute Myeloid Leukemia and received the best of care from the nurses on floor 5 East at Rex Hospital, Raleigh, NC. Thank you to each and every nurse, care taker, housekeeping representative and staff member who participated in her care. We also have great regard, respect and appreciation for Dr. Alan Kritz and the staff at Cancer Centers of NC, Raleigh, for the outstanding care they provided our mother over the course of her illness. Marlene demonstrated great strength and determination through the fourteen years of her battle with cancer. She has not been defeated but rather relieved of this fight and for that, we are thankful! In keeping with Marlene's wishes, there will be a small, private family gathering followed by an American Red Cross blood drive in Cary, NC-date, location and time to be decided. She taught all of us how to be generous and selfless and we would like to continue with her 'pay it forward' attitude by hosting this event in her honor. Please plan to participate - we will provide you with the details once we have finalized the plans. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in her name at:

John and family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Marlene. Wesley Sparling told me about her death after such a long illness. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I know it is so difficult, I lost my husband last year, it is not easy, but God is with us all.

John, Laurie and Heidi,
I was greatly saddened to learn of Cookie's death. I have such wonderful memories of our association at White Plains Church, during which Cookie was a faithful and delightful member of the choir under my direction. She was always so upbeat and encourging, a real joy to know and work with. My last contact with Cookie was a number of years ago when I called to invite her to sing with an "alumni" choir, and she declined, already feeling the effects of her illness. All who knew Cookie were blessed by her friendship and love. I will remember her with affection and joy. May God bless you with the peace that only he can provide in this time of sorrow.

There are no human words to express my love for you. I miss you terribly. I must thank you for allowing me to find my own way only to find that I am just like you. Thank you for giving me the spunk and tenacity that glowed from you into me. You showed me what unquestionable love really is. You have been given the most important blessing of eternal life with out pain and suffering and for that I am thankful. Can only imagine the welcoming you got from all our loved ones waiting there for you. I take comfort knowing that one day you will be there to welcome me into paradise.

I love and miss you so very much.
