Our hearts are saddened at the loss of such an amazing woman, but at the same time joyous that she has begun a new life without pain, disease or suffering. Marlene "Cookie" Althiser was most recently hospitalized with complications from Acute Myeloid Leukemia and received the best of care from the nurses on floor 5 East at Rex Hospital, Raleigh, NC. Thank you to each and every nurse, care taker, housekeeping representative and staff member who participated in her care. We also have great regard, respect and appreciation for Dr. Alan Kritz and the staff at Cancer Centers of NC, Raleigh, for the outstanding care they provided our mother over the course of her illness. Marlene demonstrated great strength and determination through the fourteen years of her battle with cancer. She has not been defeated but rather relieved of this fight and for that, we are thankful! In keeping with Marlene's wishes, there will be a small, private family gathering followed by an American Red Cross blood drive in Cary, NC-date, location and time to be decided. She taught all of us how to be generous and selfless and we would like to continue with her 'pay it forward' attitude by hosting this event in her honor. Please plan to participate - we will provide you with the details once we have finalized the plans. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in her name at: www.lls.org.
