On April 19, 2021, Martha Midgette Upchurch walked into the arms of Jesus at the age of 91. She retired after working for 30 years for the NC Department of Corrections. In 2006 she became a resident of Woodland Terrace Senior Living Community in Cary, NC. Recently she moved to Shelby, NC and was a resident at Elmcroft.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Franklin Hunter Upchurch Sr; 8 siblings; and her parents Lafayette and Eula Midgette.

She is survived by her sister Celia Lawrence; son Franklin Upchurch Jr (Nancy) of Raleigh, NC; daughter Paula Hipp (Danny) of Boiling Springs, NC; grandchildren: Jada Huss (Brad) of Kings Mountain, NC, Bryce Hipp(fiance Alexandra Reger) of Delray Beach, FL; great grandchildren: Hayden, Wyatt, and Ava Huss, Kayla and Jaxson.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morrisville. She served her church well by serving in the nursery for many years. She was a welcome face to the children of the church that looked forward to being in her care each week. She also was an avid gardener and used her talents to keep her home and her church beautiful. She and her late husband Frank also used their gardening abilities to keep their family, friends, and neighbors supplied with fresh vegetables from their garden. She carried her gardening talents with her to Woodland Terrace for 13 years where she helped maintain the flowers in the courtyard and made unique crafts for other residents. She will be missed by many in her family, church, and community.

A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church Morrisville with Dr. Myron Yandle and Rev. Tom Runyon officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00-1:45pm at the church. Burial at Raleigh Memorial Park will follow the funeral service.

I will miss this great lady and her stories. A favorite is when she wanted to marry—but her father told her there is no money for a wedding dress. So she put off her wedding and worked the summer in the tobacco fields to save money. She bought fabric and made her own dress.

She was a pioneer. Working a full time job when many women weren’t in the work force at all. Telling stories of her staff and career.

She lived her life for Christ. A living example of His love and grace. Rest now-well done, oh good and faithful servant.

I love you much. Connie Carleton

I was saddened to hear of her passing. I was lucky enough to get to know her while she was in Cary, she even allowed me to call her grandma. Your mother blessed so many people with her faith and kindness. Praying that you’ll find comfort in your memories of her and in the knowledge that others are missing her, too.

Martha brought so much joy to us in programs at Woodland Terrace. I still hear her laugh. Thank you for sharing her with us!

This is a sad time for those who know Martha but what a rejoicing time for her. I was lucky to have gotten to know Mrs. Upchurch for almost a year at Elmcroft of Shelby. She and I built a very strong bond in such a short time. I pray for her family and friends in this difficult time but also am assured they are at peace with God's will. I will forever treasure the friendship we grew. I Love you Martha!
