Miles Slagle Alexander, 88, of Raleigh, NC, known to all as “Digger”, was born on Independence Day, 1930 in Charlotte, NC to George C. Alexander and Willie H. Alexander. He grew up on a cotton farm and graduated from Newell High School. Miles attended Gardner Webb College for a year before joining in the call up for the Korean War. He served in the US Air Force, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Miles met his future wife, Doris T. Alexander while in the Air Force at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. They enjoyed 41 years of marriage together before her passing in 1997.
Upon leaving the service, Miles joined Carolina Power and Light, working there for 35 years, primarily as a System Load Dispatcher at the Skaale Energy Control Center in Raleigh. During his time at CP&L, he studied for and achieved a BS degree in Power Plant Engineering. He retired in 1988, enjoying a long retirement of golfing, training fox hunting dogs, and fishing.
Miles is survived by his son, Miles Steven Alexander; daughter in law, Sheri Alexander; granddaughter, Samantha Alexander; sister, Betty Sawyers; brothers, Cy and Jim Alexander; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a world of wonderful friends.
Miles and Doris were long time members of the Macedonia United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 20th from 5 to 7 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC. Visitation will also be held at Macedonia United Methodist Church, 2700 Jones Franklin Road, Cary, NC on Friday, December 21st from 12 Noon to 1 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM. Interment will be at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley, NC.
