Patricia Whitley Hudson, 84, passed away on March 22, 2026. She was born on January 1, 1942, in Smithfield, North Carolina, and was a resident of Cary, North Carolina. A hard-working, resilient, and adventurous woman, Pat lived with purpose, serving others with steady devotion and meeting each season of life with strength and grace.
Pat was a graduate of Smithfield High School and the UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing, foundations that shaped a life of compassionate service and capable leadership.
She served as a Public Health Nurse in Oklahoma and owned and operated a landscape maintenance business. Pat later became associated with Campbell Road Nursery where she enjoyed applying her talents in horticulture. In every role, Pat brought diligence, practicality, and a deep respect for the people and communities she served.
Pat was the daughter of the late Ernest Wilson Whitley and Betty Johnson Whitley. Pat is survived by her daughter, Anna Melissa Hudson; and son, Paul Allan Hudson.
A master gardener who never met a plant she did not like, Pat found joy and meaning in cultivating beauty and growth. She was instrumental in developing the Grief Center Garden at Transitions Lifecare Hospice and was past Vice President and President of MacGregor Downs Garden Club. She also enjoyed reading and traveling the world on new adventures, always eager to learn, explore, and experience what was new.
Pat served her community through many organizations, including the Public Art Advisory Board for the Town of Cary; The Carying Place; Junior Women's Club; and Cary Rotary Club, where she was a Paul Harris Fellow. She was a member of Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, deacon chair, and on the property and grounds committee—roles that reflected her faithful commitment and willingness to work quietly and consistently for the good of others.
When she finally retired, she moved to The Templeton where she became chairperson of the Grounds Committee and was instrumental in starting the bird feeding stations.
A memorial service will be held at 11am Friday, March 27, 2026 at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, 110 SE Maynard Rd., Cary, NC 27511. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
Memorials can be made in her honor to Transitions Lifecare Hospice; The Carying Place; or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
