Patrick Brian Letts, beloved husband, father, teacher, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, May 14th in Willow Spring, North Carolina.
Patrick is survived by his devoted wife Susan, his beloved sons Reagan and Hunter, his grandsons Waylon and Wyatt, his mother Hilde Stainback (Tom) of Goldsboro, his big brother Gene Jr. (Jackie) from Alaska, his nieces Courtney (Ty) Calvin from Alaska, Tonya Blackman (Philip) and Crystal Letts (Kelly) of Goldsboro and his nephew Austin (Rebekah) of Goldsboro and his favorite aunt Joan Rita Lobasso of Long Island. His many other siblings through marriage and nieces and nephews both in NC and NY along with countless friends and coworkers also grieve his passing. He joins his brother Carl Letts, his father-in-law Frank Lobasso, and his hunting buddy and colleague Joe Busby in heaven.
Patrick was born in a US Army Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, the youngest son of Hildegard and Gene Letts, brother to Gene Jr, Carl, and Robbie. Growing up in Goldsboro near Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Patrick knew from a young age that he was called to serve his country. It was no surprise that upon graduation from ECU, he immediately joined the air force, serving in Space and Missile Operations and as a classroom instructor at Officer Training School where he discovered his love of teaching.
After the military, he became a senior technician for a software company where once again he found himself teaching both coworkers and clients. All roads lead him to discover his passion and purpose to become a National Board Certified Teacher. Teaching over 3,000 students about computers, programming, and life, Patrick dedicated over 20 years to Wake County Public Schools where he served as a technology trainer for central office as well as a high school CTE teacher at East Wake, Panther Creek, and Fuquay High.
Patrick was beloved to his students for not only his style that blended structure with real-world application but also his dry wit and humor. He was known to start a lesson with an amusing dad joke or anecdote as well as being the go-to person on campus if anyone was having a technology issue. And although he often claimed to understand computers better than people, he was happy to use his analytic nature to troubleshoot and solve problems for everyone.
Beyond his teaching career, Patrick was an outdoorsman. His happiest moments were spent with his sons camping, fishing, hiking, and hunting. And although he considered himself an avid hunter, the truth was most deer were perfectly safe around him. The woods were his church where he found peace, sitting quietly in nature and marveling at the sights and sounds of all God’s creation. In the Kendall Hills community where he has lived for the last six years, “Mr. Patrick” guided the neighborhood children each evening in feeding the birds, squirrels, and deer.
Although the deer will mourn him, his family, especially his wife Susan, will love him far beyond his days on this earth.
A visitation for Patrick will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a memorial service from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 Southeast Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to https://www.ncwildlife.gov/ in Patrick’s name. He would want us to take care of his deer.
