Rebecca ‘Becky’ Wall Brown, beloved mother, dedicated church member and positive loving spirit passed away peacefully at home on February 7, 2024. Becky was born in Hartsville, SC on February 23, 1942, and was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
She was married for 31 years to the love of her life, James “Richard” Brown, who died in 1993. They spent most of their married life in Hillsdale Forest in Cary, NC where the entire family made life-long friendships. Richard was an Engineer for IBM Corporation before retiring in 1992.
Bebe, her designated grandmother name, was our family beacon and beautiful inside and out. She was known for always being fashionable and knew how to put together an outfit that was colorful and fun and made it look easy. A great southern cook, hostess and organizer. She made holidays very special for her family and loved giving gifts at Christmas. She would have a stocking for all the kids and thanks to that we will have lifelong laughs and lifetime supplies of pencils, scotch tape, sticky pads or whatever else she could pick up at the dollar store. Her presence and special decorative touches that made each gathering special will be greatly missed. She was also very adventurous and would try just about anything from parasailing, skiing or swimming in the black waters of SC rivers.
Becky graduated from Meredith College in 1964 and after raising Lori and Alan, she entered the workforce working for North Carolina State University’s School of Textiles and then completing an accomplished career with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) until she retired.
She was a member of White Plains United Methodist Church for over 55 years and during that time contributed to helping others and being a devoted member of the church choir. Becky enjoyed the beach, but her true passion was people, friends or family, and she knew how to make you feel special. For many years she comforted those at Rex Rehab by visiting them weekly, giving of herself in support of the well-being of those who needed it the most. She also had many life-long friendships fostered at White Plains and those while living in Hillsdale Forest in Cary. She also had many special groups of friends she had frequent reunions with from her kindergartner group from Hartsville, SC, her high school friends from Florence, SC and her very special Yaya group friends from across the country who she met during her years with the NCHFA. Becky was a people person whose smile would light up a room.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Richard Brown and her parents Ethlyn Brown Wall and Robert Venable Wall. She was beloved by her surviving family, son Alan M. Brown, daughter Katherine Brown Pernell “Lori” and her fiancée Tony Breland, granddaughters, Sarah Pernell and Iman Breland, grandsons, Colin Pernell and Wesley Breland, all in the triangle area close to home.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the White Plains United Methodist Church, 313 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC 27511 followed by a reception at the church chapel. Following the reception, for those that wish to join the family, a 3:30pm Graveside service at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612 will be held where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Richard.
