
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Bolen Courtney, son William H. Courtney and wife Chris of Charleston, WV; daughter Mary Lu Garrison and husband Jack of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren Chrissy Courtney, Scott Courtney and wife Renee, Jacob Garrison and wife Kate, Mary Claire Taylor and husband Troy; great-granddaughter Mary Grace Taylor; brothers Craig Courtney and wife Carolyn, Fred Courtney and wife Dell; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Courtney retired from public service in West Virginia and moved to Cary in 1988. An athlete and avid track and field enthusiast for over 50 years, he served as an official during the 1984 Olympics, the 1987 Pan American Games, and the 1990 Goodwill Games, as well as officiating at various NCAA track and field events in the triangle area. He was a member of the National Track and Field Association, the Raleigh Sports Club, and was a huge fan of West Virginia University sports and the Carolina Hurricanes.
A funeral service will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary on Wednesday, April 22 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Visitation will be held at Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin, WV, at a later date, followed by burial in the family cemetery in Centreville, WV. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staffs of Visiting Angels and Heartland Hospice for their exceptional care of Mr. Courtney.
