
Dr. Richard Knapp, MD was the son of the late Hilda and Jack Knapp of New York City. He is survived by Harriett Knapp, RN, his wife of 61 years; his daughters Carolyn Green, RN, and Pamela Townsend Jenkins, PE, grandchildren Leah Townsend and Charles Townsend, all of North Carolina; son, Dr. Benjamin Knapp, Ph.D. of Blacksburg, VA; brother, Dr. Robert Knapp, MD of NYC and Florida. He is preceded in death by his daughter Laurie.
Richard graduated from Columbia College, New York Medical College, and completed his residency in anesthesia at Cornell-New York Hospital. His distinguished medical career included Professor and Chairman of Anesthesiology at West Virginia University Medical Center.
Richard served throughout his life in many ways. He was a Medical Naval Officer in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He and Harriett started, and maintained for 13 years, a medical program on the Caribbean island of Barbuda. Richard was the author of: The Gift of Surgery to Mankind: A History of Modern Anesthesiology. He enjoyed teaching medical students, residents and other physicians for which he received the Distinguished Alumni Medal from New York Medical College.
Richard loved to travel with Harriett. A sports enthusiast, he was an avid Yankees, Indianapolis Colts, and West Virginia University athletics fan. Richard enjoyed his retirement years with the wonderful Woodland Terrace Community.
Burial will be in New York. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society.
