Rita Julia Cuomo, aged 76, died peacefully on Saturday, January 16, 2016 surrounded by the love of her family after a brave struggle with breast cancer. Rita was born on May 22, 1939 in the Bronx, NY, the youngest daughter of Frank and Antoinette Cossa.
She is survived by her husband Jerome Cuomo; their children, Stephanie Rossi (Eric) of Brookfield, CT, Gennaro Cuomo (Stephanie) of Durham, NC, and Andrea Scholer (Matthew) of Chapel Hill, NC; grandchildren, Rose, Gennaro, Kristen, Natalie, Caroline and Samuel; and Rita’s siblings Jean Vitale, Angelina Stabile, and Richard Cossa.
She is preceded by her parents, sister, and eleven brothers.
Rita attended Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. She was blessed with a marriage of 56 years to her husband and sweetheart “Jerry”. Together they enjoyed a rich life filled with faith and love with their three children and six grandchildren. Rita was the youngest of 16 children and was part of an extraordinary, close and loving family - she cherished any opportunity to be with them.
Rita’s kitchen was a source of great joy and from it came some of her greatest expressions of love. From “feel better soup”, pasta on Sundays and her special pancakes for breakfast, no one left without being filled with abundant food, love and laughter. She was a woman full of gentle wisdom who was always eager to listen and give selflessly. She was proud and relished in the successes of her family as well as others. Some of her passions were swimming, dancing to disco, watching classic movies, spending summer family vacations at the beach, talking often with her friends, her family in NY and her children and attending Jazzercise and coffee with her friends. No one could help but to love her instantly and she was the light in everyone’s day. She was a true beauty inside and out and our “Reetz” as she was lovingly called, will forever be missed.
