Sam was born in Brooklyn, NY to Lillian and Samuel Mahood, the last of three sons and the first to be born in the hospital. He was also the first in his family to attend college at City College of New York, majoring in Civil Engineering. His education was interrupted by WWII and he served in the U.S. Airforce as a navigator and bombardier for the B17. After the war, Sam married Eileen Kearns in 1949. They had 57 wonderful years of marriage and raised five children together. Sam and Eileen relocated from Long Island, NY to Pennsylvania, then to California and Florida, finally settling in Cary, NC to be close to their eldest daughter Arlene. Sam was a devoted catholic and democrat. He enjoyed traveling, many fine felines and a nice glass of Canadian club.
He was one of the last of the greatest generation.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years. Eileen Mahood in 2007, his brothers Vincent Mahood , Robert Mahood (Doris), sister in law Teresa Walsh (John), two nieces Linda and Diane Mahood, one nephew Michael Walsh.
Sam is survived by his five children, Dr. Arlene Massaro (Edward), Laura Hillis (Shawn), Thomas Mahood (Cathy), Samual Mahood (Sharon), Mary Blagden (Isreal) and grandchildren, Samuel, Dylan and Ella, Special Friend Nan Jones, Devoted Friends Dave Kauffman and Matt Lombardi. Cats, Buster, Cinnamon and Sweetie.
The family would like to thank Sam’s caregivers, all the staff at Glenaire Skilled Nursing Facility and The Glade and Dr Wes Lawson M.D., Rev. Carrie Tuttle, as well as Transitions Hospice, especially Heather. The Staff at Wake Urology and Dr. Rubens, Wake Med Hospital and Emergency Room Staff.
