Sandra Elizabeth Jones Archer died April 21, 2013 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh. She was born to the late William Morton and Elizabeth Ann Johnson Jones on December 9, 1944 in Miami, Florida, where her father had his first pastorate at the First Baptist Church of Hialeah. Sandra grew up in South Carolina where she graduated from Walterboro High School and from Furman University in Greenville, SC with a BA in Spanish. She used her Spanish throughout the years as she taught in the public school system, tutored privately in her home, volunteered translation wherever needed and was the clerk of the New Hope Presbytery Commission to start the first Hispanic church in Wake County.
After moving to Raleigh, she started her own business in 1981. For 30 years she owned and operated Kennedy Archer, a multi-service marketing and advertising firm. She served on the Board of Directors of Urban Ministries and was hired as the agency’s first Development Director. She also was a Board member of Camp Oak Hill and assisted with the capital campaign. Most recently, she served as a board member at St. Savior’s Center where she was communications chair. She was involved in many of the programs at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder. She played the piano in her Sunday School class for many years, but her real love and greatest joy was being the Bible moderator for Circle I, the Springmoor Circle of Presbyterian Women. She was proud to be one of the “town” ladies. For faithful service to the mission of the church, she received the Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership award in 2009. Above all else, she loved her girls, Laura and Lee Ann. In her later years she treasured the time spent with her grandchildren teaching them all about the birds that God created and all about his son, Jesus.
Sandra is survived by her husband and best friend, James Philip Archer of Raleigh and her precious daughters, Laura Elizabeth Kennedy Bland (James) of Winston-Salem, and Lee Ann Kennedy of Raleigh; two beloved grandchildren, James (Jay) Earl Bland III and Olivia Thornton Bland; brothers and sisters, Linda Jones McLellan (Tom), Carey William Jones (Joette), Paula Jones Compton (John), Justin Wright Jones (Lisa); several nieces and nephews: Tommy, Amy, Carey, Jack, Jordan, Thomas, Jared and Ryan.
A celebration of her life will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church at 2pm on Wednesday, April 24, 2013. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Jane Bell Gathering Space.
The family would like to thank the staff of Rex ICU for their exceptional care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608; or charity of your choice.
