Sara was an alumna of Simmons College, Boston University, and Columbia University. She taught deaf children for many years in Riverside, California before surprising everyone by traveling abroad to be a private teacher for a family in Hong Kong. There, she met a dashing U.S. Army officer named Joe Eng. After a whirlwind romance, they were married 40 years until Joe’s death in 2009. After marriage, Sara lived in Oakland, California, Thailand, and Sierra Vista, Arizona before moving to Tucson, Arizona in 1974, where she was a speech therapist with the Easter Seal Society until she retired.
Sara and Joe moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in 1998, fulfilling Sara’s dream of once again living near the ocean. She enjoyed weekly beach walks, bridge games, water aerobics, volunteering as an usher in local theaters, and many trips abroad with friends and family. Sara moved to Cary in 2024. Known for being direct and determined, she also knew how to have fun. She loved Thai food, dark chocolate, good TV and movies, and most of all, books, instilling her lifelong love of reading in her children.
She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Snively and Emily Kaplan, son-in-law David Snively, and four grandchildren, Evan Snively, Theo Kaplan, Damien Kaplan, and Amy Snively.
