When she was still a child, the family moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where she grew up. She attended high school in Kabul, Afghanistan and Broughton in Raleigh. She graduated from the University of North Carolina with a BA and North Carolina State University with a Masters of Public Administration. Sylvia’s footprints could be seen in her motherhood, teaching, caregiving, fellowship and leadership at home, at the Kirk of Kildaire in Cary and in Guatemala. Sylvia’s handprints addressed thousands of cards for birthdays, anniversaries, and moments where care needed expression. Sylvia’s thought-prints intentionally shaped two amazing adult daughters and by example shaped so many others.
As people learned of Sylvia’s illness and death, the attributes “thoughtful”, “kind”, “caring”, “loving”, and “wise” show up over and over. She made a rich life for her husband and daughters with those attributes, and that is how her family will keep her in their hearts forever.
She is survived by her husband Craig, her daughters Claire Capps (Johnny Capps) and Johanna Owens (BJ Owens), her brother Bobby Douglas (Cindy Douglas), her sister Vivian Mandracchia (Rodney Mandracchia) and three grandchildren: Ryan Capps, Alex Owens and Graham Owens.
The Kirk of Kildaire will host her funeral and inurnment at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 6.
In lieu of flowers, tributes to her life and work can be made to the American Lung Association.
