Theresa Ann Shumaker Palmer

Theresa Ann Palmer of Cary, North Carolina died on April 20, 2020 at Searstone Retirement Community. She was born on February 16, 1932 in Hyndman, Pennsylvania to Harry Shumaker and Nell Kilroy Shumaker. She had one brother named Harry. She attended the University of Pittsburgh where she earned her Bachelor and Masters of Nursing Degrees while in her 30’s and at the same time raising her family.

During her career, she worked as a nurse and spent the last 12 years of her career as Director of Nursing for hospitals in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. She also taught the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Parkway West Technical School.

Theresa loved life, played bridge, the piano, was active in an investment club, traveled with her family and was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church. She was also active in Toastmasters, where she won some regional awards for her presentations.

She is survived by 2 children, Janice Horton (married to Neil Horton) and Scott Palmer (married to Davona Palmer), and 4 grandchildren Matthew Horton, Katie Horton, Sarah Palmer and Rachel Palmer DiMaggio.

She lived a vibrant, selfless 88 years that was dedicated to family, friends and church.

Due to the health crisis, we will be unable to have a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in her memory.
