Thomas William Dowd

February 27, 1942 – October 5, 2025
Obituary of Thomas William Dowd
IN THE CARE OF

Brown-Wynne Funeral Home

Thomas W. Dowd—beloved husband, father, and grandfather—passed away on October 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 27, 1942, in Utica, New York, he was the cherished son of Thomas P. Dowd and Dorothy Leach. A proud graduate of Whitesboro High School’s Class of 1960, Tom went on to earn his degree from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1964.

On November 7, 1964, Tom married the love of his life, Barbara Clark, at Sacred Heart Church in Yorkville, New York. Throughout their 60 years together, they built a rich and joyful life grounded in family, friendship, and adventure. Their many family trips—camping, boating, and fishing across the lakes of Central New York, the St. Lawrence River, and the Finger Lakes—created countless cherished memories.

Beyond family life, Tom and Barb especially treasured time with friends—whether skiing out west, golfing, traveling, or simply enjoying the outdoors. Their shared adventures reflected their zest for life and the deep, enduring friendships they cultivated and cherished along the way.

Baseball was among Tom’s greatest lifelong passions. A talented player through his college years, he later found even greater fulfillment in coaching Little League. Some of his happiest moments were spent at the ballfield—first cheering on his son Kevin, and in later years, proudly watching his grandson, Luke. Tom loved supporting all his children in their athletic pursuits; he could always be found in the stands or on the sidelines, cheering them on with unwavering pride and enthusiasm.

A man of deep faith, Tom was a devoted member of Saint Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex, North Carolina, where he found strength and community.

He was also an animal lover at heart, cherishing his beagle companion of 18 years. In tribute to his love of animals, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of Wake County, 200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603, or online at www.spcawake.org.

Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Barbara Dowd of Cary, North Carolina; his son Thomas Dowd and daughter-in-law Terri Dowd of Leesburg, Virginia; son Kevin Dowd and daughter-in-law Dawn Dowd of Churchville, New York; and daughter Debra LeFevre and son-in-law Jeff LeFevre of New Hill, North Carolina. He also leaves behind five treasured grandchildren: Briana Niemeyer and husband Colin, Britany Martinez and husband Jonathan, Alexandra Dowd, Madison Dowd, and Luke LeFevre.

A private funeral service will be held in accordance with Tom’s wishes.

Tom’s legacy is one of love, faith, family, and an appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors. He will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the joy he brought to all who knew him.
