He was born April 24, 1962, in Dayton, Ohio, and was a graduate of Cary High School, Class of 1980. He was a resident of Raleigh, North Carolina and was employed with Sullivan Surveying with over 35 years of service.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Joan Hartshorn; and his brother, Russell Arthur Hartshorn.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Kaylin Hartshorn (Caleb); the mother of his daughter, Kim Hartshorn; mother-in-law, Linda (Poppy) Gunn; brothers, Rob Hartshorn (Amy), and Mike Hartshorn; sister, Estelle Wallace; nephews, Michael Hartshorn, Eric Beamon (Crissy) and their children, Hunter, Kinley, Harper, and Ellie, Chris Beamon (Jennifer) and their child Brandi; nieces, Taylor Brace, and Tanner Brace (Gabe); and his loyal dog, Buster.
To those who knew him, Tom will be remembered with deep affection for the warmth he brought into a room and the easy, genuine enjoyment he found in everyday life. His loving nature and spirited sense of fun were evident in the way he connected with others and in the simple pleasures he cherished. An avid Carolina Hurricanes and North Carolina Tarheels fan, he followed his teams with pride and enthusiasm. Tom was even able to witness the Carolina Hurricanes’ second Stanley Cup win. He also enjoyed his Jeep, along with multiple classic cars he owned in his life, and spending time in the mountains—places and moments that suited his appreciation for both adventure and companionship. However, spending time with his daughter, Kaylin, brought him the ultimate joy.
A funeral service will be held 2pm Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 200 SE Maynard Rd., Cary, NC 27511. Burial will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1pm - 2pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
