

Virginia Starling Overman, 89, passed away January 7, 2013. She was born July 11, 1923 in Rocky Mount, NC to Arthur L. and Elizabeth Starling. She graduated from Rocky Mount High School. After high school, Virginia attended Carolina School of Commerce Business School in Rocky Mount. She worked as a secretary in Washington, DC, then returned to Rocky Mount and married Tracy M. Overman. She worked at Sidney Blumenthal and later Burlington Industries as a secretary. Virginia retired from Schlage Lock.
She attended Calvary Baptist Church on Nashville Road in Rocky Mount where she played piano and organ for years. She was also the pianist for the Calvary Quartet and the Calvary Trio Gospel Groups. Virginia moved to High Point, NC in 1993 and joined Deep River Baptist Church on Eastchester where she became the church pianist. She moved to Cary, NC in 2001 and joined First Baptist Church of Cary where she became very involved with the Happy Hearts and T.H.A.T. Sunday School Class. She played piano for Jordan Oaks Retirement Community church services and worked part-time at K-Mart just to stay active.
Virginia is survived by her son, Wally Overman and wife, Ruth of Manteo; granddaughter, Kelly Farless and husband, Tim of Cary; grandson, Walter B. “Snapper” Overman of Cary; and her great grandsons, Grayson and Parker Farless of Cary.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511. A reception will follow.
