Helen’s early life included many occupations—teaching, serving as a nurse’s aide, and working at the North Dakota State Capitol, where she shared an apartment with her sister, Marion.
Her Roman Catholic faith was the foundation of her entire life, guiding her decisions and relationships, so deeply rooted that she once considered a vocation with the Benedictine Sisters.
Fortunately, Jack Berger stole her heart, and on August 5, 1958, they were married in Bismarck, North Dakota. Over their 57 years together, they loved and cared deeply for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Helen had a beautiful voice and sang to her children at every opportunity. Her gift for music created a family legacy. Her artistry extended beyond music into painting, drawing, sculpture, quilting, and sewing.
Helen was also an exceptional baker. She began by baking her own birthday cake at the age of 13 and soon became her family’s baker. Her bread was award-winning, and she loved sharing a pan of caramel rolls.
Helen often shared those baked goods with her many friends. Her limitless heart nurtured many new meetings into deep and lasting friendships. Helen was so many things to so many people. A shoulder to cry on, a surrogate mother, a port in a storm and a reliable and compassionate listener. She always had a ready smile and could make you laugh with a silly dance. There wasn’t a greater love than hers.
Helen and Jack raised six children: Maureen Berger of Casa Grande, Arizona; Blaine Berger of Longmont, Colorado; Maurice Berger of Chugiak, Alaska; Audrey Cardany of Wakefield, Rhode Island, Zita Berger of Los Angeles, California, and Damian Berger of Parker, Colorado.
The Berger family thrived in North Dakota, Wyoming, and Arizona.
Helen is survived by the family she treasured, Maureen Berger (Larry Aikin), Blaine Berger (Susan), Maurice Berger (Cinda), Audrey Cardany (Brian), Zita Berger, and Damian Berger (Susie); six grandchildren, Jason Berger (Stephanie), Nathan Berger (Christi), Beth Berger, Eric Berger (Lexa), Emily Greensfelder (Tyler), and Caitlin Anne Cardany (deceased); eight great-grandchildren, Jackson Berger, Jordan Berger, Evander Berger, Rowen Greensfelder,
Harlo Greensfelder, Harper Greensfelder, baby girl Greensfelder arriving in December 2025, and Brinley Berger; and eight sisters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; granddaughter, Caitlin; her parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
