Alice Katherine Scott was born during a snowstorm on September 16, 1942 in Kiowa, Colorado to John Glenn and Margaret Winifred (Cottrill) Scott. She was the fourth of 7 children, sister to Bill, John, Gladys, Flori, Dorothy, and Phillip.
The family lived on a ranch northeast of Kiowa and was self-sustainable with cattle, several milk cows, and chickens. Their farm life consisted of a lot of hard work, but they also found time to enjoy each other through their efforts. Alice and her sisters also enjoyed various antics designed by their brother John, including rides down the hilltop southeast of the house in an old oil drum which he would kick and roll, and Alice regularly being dangled over the cliffs by her feet to collect pigeon eggs to sustain his growing pigeon enterprise. Other great memories included wonderful games of hide and seek, and boxes of fireworks for the fourth of July on years that were fruitful. Always a strong type A personality, she was double promoted from second to fourth grade in the little one room school house where they attended before they moved to the big school in Byers. A dog named Queenie helped instill a lifelong love for dogs and other animals that would continue through her whole life. Alice attended Colorado State University and received her Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Business Education.
Alice married Bob Hinton on December 21, 1965. They moved to Upland, CA for a short time upon both obtaining their first teaching jobs. After the birth of their first daughter, Laura, in 1969, the family returned to Colorado where Alice stayed home and raised Laura and Leslie Rhea, who was born in September, 1970, until the girls started first grade and she went back to teaching at Smoky Hill High School, where she taught Business and typing. Bob and Alice also spent many hours in the gym and at horse shows watching their daughters succeed both in the gym and in the arena. Alice helped to open Overland High School, which she was able to set up computers and networks to be on the forefront of business education. She retired from teaching in the late 1990’s to be able to enjoy leisure time with Bob and all of their grandkids
.
During the years following retirement, Alice and Bob spent many hours watching grandchildren play football, wrestle, show livestock, play soccer, and various other academic and school related activities. In 2009, after a life-changing stroke, Alice cared for Bob at home during his recovery, until his death in December, 2012.
Shortly after Bob’s death, Alice was diagnosed with cancer. She bravely and gallantly fought with all of her might to beat the cancer, and did a pretty good job, until her death on October 3, 2015. She often amazed family and her health caretakers with her can-do spirit. The nurses in the oncology unit were constantly amazed by her positive spirit and her determination throughout her treatment plans.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her husband of 47 years, her parents, John Glenn Scott, Margaret Winifred Lilian (Cottrill) Scott, her brothers Bill and John, and her sisters Gladys and Dorothy. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Teague (Gary) and Leslie Baumgartner (Curtis), and her sister Flori Hamilton (Ray) and her brother Phillip Scott (Linda), and sister-in-law Karen Scott (Wayland). She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Shelby, Tucker and Charlee Jo Teague and Sydney, Taya, Braden and Tanner Baumgartner.
