On August 4, 1962, she married John Vlasin in Grant, Nebraska. Bernadette and John farmed and ranched near Grainton, Nebraska. She was a very involved farm wife, gardening, canning and pickling, sewing, hunting, and was a farmer when required. She was very involved in St Mary’s Catholic Church and all facets of her children’s school life. As her youngest son graduated from high school, Bernadette earned her nursing degree. She nursed at the local hospitals around her.
In 2001, Bernadette’s beloved husband, John, passed away. She made a very brave decision to move from the family farm to Highlands Ranch, Colorado to be closer to her children and grandchildren. When she moved to Colorado, Bernadette was a telephonic case management nurse until she retired at 69. She enjoyed her grandchildren's activities, playing bridge, gardening, cooking, quilting, and traveling. She loved playing board games and card games with her family and friends. She actively participated at Pax Christi Catholic Church and many different ministries at Pax Christi including sewing alter cloths, mending cassocks, MOPs, Chirp, new parishioner welcoming, and various book clubs and bible studies.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Ted and Mary; grandson, Dominic Russell; sister, Donna Burge; sisters-in-law: Idella Lorenz, Irma Sand, Alice Muff, Helen Macholan, Dorothy Welch, Genevieve Vlasin, and Clair Vlasin; brothers-in-law: Joe Lorenz, Raymond Sand, Herbert Muff, Vic Cecava, Robert Macholan, Robert Welch and Richard Vlasin.
