David Albert Stowell was born on July 26, 1943 to Aubrey and Justine Stowell in Indianapolis, IN. He was later joined by little brother, Aubrey III. When David was just two years old, his father lost his life serving his country in WWII.
When David was 13, he moved to Lansing, MI where he was then raised by his paternal grandparents, and graduated high school. David was eternally grateful for their care and guidance during his childhood.
After high school, David began his journey at Michigan State, where he majored in finance. He was 22 when he was hired by William Reichenbach as a manager for Reichenbach Construction and thus began his long career path in construction. At just 24, David became a sole business owner of Flint Ceiling & Partition Company. Over the years, David also owned Contract Interiors, KHS&S and Stowell Company. A self-made man, David took pride in his work ethic, commitment, and dependability. One of David’s proudest career accomplishments was receiving the construction job for Spaceship Earth at Disney’s Epcot Center.
David met the love of his life, Daria Karpelenia, on July 4th, 1978 at a party at David’s home. Daria, fighting cancer and teaching kindergarteners at the time, assumed she could handle anyone or anything – but handling David Stowell was an experience all on its own. Their courtship lasted just two years, before they were married on December 27, 1980. Their marriage of 42 years was built on love, laughter, family and friends. They lived in Flint until 1986, when his career took them to Florida.
In 1987, God put a special plan in place to expand their family. Born on January 11, 1988 in Michigan was a baby boy weighing 3 lbs. 11 oz. That boy, Anthony Tyler, would later complete the Stowell home and their hearts. A spitting image of his dad, Anthony has been David’s sidekick for life. Anthony married Layne Sandercott on August 13, 2016. David and Layne had a special relationship where they shared an entrepreneurial spirt, the joy of horses, but mostly, a mutual love for Anthony.
Anthony credits his father for the man and parent he has become. David taught Anthony the importance of both an education but also common sense. He showed Anthony by example how to balance work and play & family and friends. It is because of David that Anthony has an equally high regard for honesty, integrity, and punctuality. Of no surprise, Anthony’s favorite memories with his dad took place in the outdoors.
David, a cowboy in his previous life, loved Bob Seger, Willie Nelson & John Denver. He felt most at home with his horses and his family on the Stowell Ranch in Winter Park, CO. David’s love of adventure was evident in everything he did. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, riding Harley Davidsons, fly fishing, race car driving, snowmobiling, four wheeling, hunting, and flying. David’s “work hard, play hard” mentality made him an easy companion and great friend to many. But, his favorite co-partners in adventure were Daria and Anthony.
Although David went out for adventure, he came home for love. David and Daria’s favorite memories were traveling to Italy numerous times, visiting family and friends, sharing a good meal with one of David’s perfectly grilled steaks and celebrating both the big and small moments of life. But, their favorite thing to do together was dance. Their last dance took place on David’s 79th birthday in their home.
David was blessed to become a grandpa just four years ago with the birth of Riley Elizabeth, and later, a boy appropriately named after his “Pop Pop,” Corey David. A third child will join the family in June. David made the most of his limited time with his grandkids – snuggling, playing, and laughing with them.
In 2017, David was diagnosed with Lewey Body Dementia.
David, father, grandfather, uncle, godfather, friend, mentor and child of God, passed away peacefully in his home in Parker, Colorado surrounded by his family on March 2, 2023. Preceding him in death are his parents, grandparents, his brother Aubrey, his brother-in-law Daniel, and his father-in-law Rt. Very Rev. Basil Karpelenia.
He leaves a legacy of life and love behind with his “Babe”, Daria; his son Anthony (Layne), his grandchildren, Riley and Corey David, and his horse, Robin. Also mourning are his Godson, Tony Coppola, his “Gray Hogs” motorcycle crew, and countless friends and family.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Agape Hospice, ComforCare, and Nora & Bobbi, his wonderful caregivers. Daria, Anthony and Layne are thankful to those who simply showed up for David with their friendship, presence and kindness through the end. Memorial contributions may be made to Agape Hospice.
