Denise Bozzi Tonkin, of Castle Rock, Colorado, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, at the age of 93. She was born on Christmas Eve in 1932 in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil, to Hugo Bozzi and Edith Alencar — a Christmas Eve baby whose warmth would mark every season of her long life.
Denise spent her formative years in Rio de Janeiro, the city that shaped her spirit and her sense of self. As a young woman, she worked at the American Embassy in Rio as a bilingual secretary, a role that placed her at the crossroads of two worlds. It was there she met Thomas Marvin Tonkin, the American who would become her husband. Their marriage took her from Brazil to a life few could have imagined — together they were stationed in Argentina, Panama, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Brazil itself, where she returned not as a daughter but as a wife and mother, sharing her homeland with her own family before they eventually settled in the United States. Though the marriage later ended in divorce, those years gave her two children and a lifetime of stories about the places she had lived and the people she had loved.
Faith was the steady current beneath every chapter of Denise’s life. Raised Roman Catholic in Brazil, she lived as a true Christian — her belief was not a tradition she carried but a love she gave away daily. She had a deep and abiding affection for American veterans and for service men and women stationed overseas, never forgetting the dignity of those who serve far from home.
Anyone who met Denise will tell you the same thing: she never met a stranger. She was social by nature and generous by instinct, the kind of person who could turn an introduction into a friendship before the coffee cooled. She loved a full table, a lively gathering, and food with character — the spicier the better. Tradition was sacred to her, and she carried the rhythms of her Brazilian culture into every home she made, every holiday she hosted, every meal she shared.
Denise is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas Harry Tonkin and his wife Jean Marie Tonkin; her daughter, Vanessa Marie Tonkin; and her three grandchildren, who were her great joy: Erin Louise Seibel and her husband Taylor Seibel of Strasburg, Colorado; Ryan Michael Hancock Ordway and his wife Chelsea Ordway of Lakeville, Minnesota; and Alexander Thomas Tonkin and his wife Katie Tonkin of Castle Rock, Colorado. She also leaves behind her cherished great-grandson, Gracen, son of Ryan and Chelsea. She is survived as well by her beloved Brazilian nieces and nephews — too numerous to name, but always at the center of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo and Edith.
A private service will be held in her honor. Those who wish to remember Denise are invited to make a donation to the charity of their choice in her name, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
She lived 93 years across two continents and several countries, raised two children, adored three grandchildren, welcomed a great-grandson, and gathered an extraordinary number of friends along the way. She leaves behind a family shaped by her warmth, her faith, and her unmistakable joy in being among the people she loved.
Descanse em paz, Mãe.
