DJ was athletic and rode a bicycle at age three, played baseball from age three through high school. He played basketball, and saxophone in the band and then jazz band in college. DJ was a proud K-State graduate with a Bachelor’s in the school of Engineering. He started working for Mortenson Construction right after graduation, in El Paso, Texas. Most recently, for the past year, DJ worked at JHL Constructors in Englewood, CO. He was proud of the work they were doing.

Old friend, it is hard to say goodbye.

I am so honored to have grown up with you. My memories keep going back to high school band trips and camps. Specifically, that little convertible you had that we all would cram ourselves into to go up and grab lunch at Mazzios during band camp breaks. All the fun times and late nights with you at KState and the 813 Moro gang. But most of all, I remember when you decided to rush Pike and how crazy we all thought you were. I think we were all selfishly worried we would lose you as a friend, but it was quite the opposite in that we met and gained so many new friends as well.

That was something you were great at- bringing people together. You truly were a pal to all. I don’t know how Kevin and I would have ever met if you hadn’t made what at the time seemed like such a small life decision, to join the fraternity, and the two of us are so incredibly grateful for having had you in our lives for that.

Throughout the many good and occasional bad times, I always considered you a brother I never had, and I will cherish the times together growing up. Thanks for the memories Deej.

My heart breaks for your family. Thank you all so much for sharing such a charismatic and fun-loving spirit with us.

I will miss you my friend. You were one of the few people in this word that naturally bring joy to those around you without even thinking about it. I have a lot of good memories from college with you. You always had the funniest stories several of which I was involved in. You knew how to live each day with happiness and kindness to others. You were someone I could always count on when I needed a friend.

My sweet cousin D.J.'s life ended way too soon for us here on earth but I know he is in God's loving arms. Aunt Cindy, Megan and Lauren, please hang in there and take time for yourself. Love you all so much!

When I see memories shared, it touches my heart and makes me so happy. I will forever be grateful for every condolence we have received, whether it be on this memorial, Facebook, Texts, Email, card, phone calls whatever the communication I have read every single one, it puts a smile on my face and a tear in my eye, but makes me stronger. Thank you.
The dogs are doing great. They are mourning. The girls wanted to keep them together.

DJ and I were roommates my last year in college and we both lived out of the fraternity house. Our majors were in the same department so we always were in the same building. We had some great times in college and I have only fond memories of the time we spent together. Whether it was going on spring break to Florida when he was in a walking boot or working late nights on projects for our majors, he was always a joy to be around. He was a very kind hearted person and would do anything he could to help a friend. My fondest memory could be when DJ, myself, and Justin Killingsworth (third roommate) decorated our house for Christmas. It was in true "Clark Griswold" fashion. We had so many lights that we had to run extension cords from different circuits to power them all without tripping the breakers. He will definitely be missed and remembered. Sending prayers and condolences.

I was DJ's supervisor as an intern at Ft Riley, KS and on his first job at Ft Bliss, TX. He was an outstanding young engineer. Eager to learn and a joy to coach.
I'm sure he and Larry Larson are upstairs working together and planning the next big job...the Lord's House.
Until we soar together again, my friend,
God speed.

ps - Here's a pic with your friend, Jesse, at Ft Bliss. Remembering the good times.
Miss you Bro.

Haven’t talked to DJ much since he graduated high school. We were pretty tight friends in high school. Played in high school band together and played in the jazz band at JCCC together. And we even formed a band together during his senior year. We were terrible lol. But we had a lot of fun. I’m at a loss of words. Always hits hard to hear tragic news of an old friend

I was close to DJ in college. He was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever meet and his smile was infectious. I learned a lot about cars, especially fast ones, from him. He also introduced me to other types of music (hence the photo 🤗) which I still love to this day. He was full of passion! It is heartbreaking to hear of his passing. My sincerest condolences to his family. He talked about all of you a lot when we were together. I know he loved you all greatly. I am sending prayers of strength for you through this time of grief.
