Donald M. Rupert, 87, of Castle Rock, Colorado formally of Denver, Colorado and Charleston, West Virginia, peacefully passed away on July 25, 2011 at the home of his daughter and surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born in South Carbon, West Virginia on November 7, 1923 to John Albert Broadus and Norma Morgan Rupert. Don was the only grandchild delivered by his grandfather, Dr. Leancy Rupert. This fact and his resemblance to his grandfather earned him the nickname “Little Doc”and later just “Doc”. He grew up in Edmund, West Virginia, Vinton, Ohio and Augusta, Georgia.
Don worked for GMAC in Charleston and Beckley and in 1956 he moved with his family to Odessa, Texas to work for S.I.C. After several transfers in Texas and New Mexico, Don moved his family to the Thornton, Colorado area where he and his wife, the former Aleen Berry of Gassaway, raised their three children, Susan, Nancy and Andy.
Don enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life . First and foremost, his genealogy research made him the family expert and had an article printed about his great grandfather Dr. Cyrus Rupert of Greenbrier county. Much of his research can be found in Salt Lake City at the Morman Library. Don was also an avid photographer leaving thousands of cherished photos. In the mid 1940’s Don had his own photography business in Charleston . He was a ham operator belonging to the Masons Radops group. He was an avid fisherman and loved camping in the Colorado Rockies with his family and friends.
Most of all, he was a wonderful family man who did everything and shared everything he could with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Aleen, daughter Susan (Fred) Mazzotti, Nancy Hein, and son Andrew Rupert. He leaves 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren all of Colorado who will miss their “Papaw”.
He is also survived by a brother James Rupert of Jacksonville, Florida and two sisters, Margaret Green of Silver Springs, Maryland and Evelyn Jackson of Charleston, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A special thanks to the wonderful caretakers of the Hospice of St. John of Colorado. A graveside service will be held at Beall’s Mill Cemetery in Gassaway on Monday, August 1, 2011 at 1:00pm.
Arrangements under the direction of Olinger Andrews Caldwell Gibson Chapel, Castle Rock, CO.
