Edward Harold Harris

Edwards H. Harris, formerly of Dixon, Illinois and a recent transplant to Castle Rock, Colorado, passed away last Friday morning from a short illness. He was born to Pierson D. and Catharine (Palmer) Harris on March 13, 1931 in Satanta, Kansas. He was the youngest of five children. The Harris family moved from Kansas to New Mexico finally settling in Colorado in the later 1930's.

Ed graduated from Littleton High School in 1951, having lettered in wrestling all four years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division better known as "The Big Red One". This is the oldest continuously serving division of the U.S. Army that was started in 1917. The division served in Germany where Ed was a medic.

While stationed at Fort Carson, he met the love of his life, Jean Rogers, on a blind date. They were married June 1955 in her hometown of Dixon, Illinois. They had one daughter, Denise Harris-Frazier of Franktown, Colorado.

Ed was an ardent and dedicated member of the American Legion, Post #12 for over 49 years, taking the position as Post Commander for 2 years. He also became involved with the Boy Scout Troop #9, associated with that American Legion Post for 20 years.

Ed was retied from the U.S. Postal Service in Dixon after 32 years as the custodian in both the old and new buildings.

He was preceded in death by both parents and two sisters (Mavis Kolm and Sylvia Esther Trancher). Ed is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean ( Rogers) Harris, his daughter, Denise Harris Frazier and her husband Michael Frazier both of Franktown, Colorado, a sister Gloria Sneed of Idaho and a brother Othello "Buck" Harris of Colorado.

A memorial service will be held in Castle Rock in the near future and a second service in Dixon, Illinois that will announced at a later date. As requested by the family, he will be cremated and there will be no graveside services. In lieu of flowers there will be a memorial in his name with proceeds going to the American Legion Post #12 at 1120 W. First St. Dixon, Illinois 61021.
