George D. Guritz, 76, a nearly life-long resident of Illinois, and recent transplant to Colorado, was received into Heaven on February 24, 2022, from his home in Castle Rock, Colorado. The son of the late Elmer and Henrietta Guritz, George was born on a cold and windy morning on December 6th, 1945, in Evanston, IL. He graduated from Maine East High School in Park Ridge, IL in 1964 and was awarded a full ride scholarship to Northwestern University in Evanston, IL from where he received both his BS degree in Business Administration in 1968 and his MBA in Finance and Marketing in 1969.
In the summer of 1977 George met Georgeanna Axiotis and after a two-year courtship they married April 12, 1980, in Silvis, Illinois. God then blessed them with two beautiful daughters, Megan and Jennifer. Their home in Long Grove, IL was a place where family and friends gathered for many occasions over thirty-five years. When not at home the family enjoyed traveling the U.S. as well as countries abroad.
George had set his sights on a career in stocks and bonds from the time of his middle school days. After graduating from Northwestern, he began his career at Dominick & Dominick. He would continue in that field at several stock exchange firms including Bear Stearns, Dean Witter, Merrill Lynch and Prudential Securities. In 1996 he opened his own firm, Shepherd Financial, where he made a specialty of bank stocks and insurance services.
In his youth, while attending confirmation classes at his church, George accepted Christ as his Savior. That commitment motivated him to later serve as an usher for the Village Church of Barrington, IL, where he also worked with the AWANA program and managed the men’s softball team for many years and several championship seasons. He also served on the boards of endPoverty.org, Trinity International University Sports Scholarships, and Cedarville University Business Development. He currently was serving as an usher at the Plum Creek Church in Castle Rock.
When it came to athletic pursuits George’s two favorite outlets were softball and bowling. He was a homerun hitting softball player for many years and he had been part of a bowling league for most of his adult life in both Des Plaines and Lake Zurich, Illinois. Since moving he had most recently joined the Homesteaders League at Arapahoe Lanes in Greenwood Village where he was helping his team achieve first place status for their season.
George had a lifelong love for baseball, whether playing in little league, collecting baseball cards, or attending ball games. He followed the Chicago Cubs as well as the White Sox and was able to finally see both teams win the World Series.
George was a loving and generous man; there was no stopping him when helping someone he cared about. He was also someone with an amazing sense of humor; he loved a funny joke. He was content to relax, especially by the pool or on the beach, reading a book. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who cherished time spent with his family and his dogs, Jasper, Bentley, and most recently, Benji.
George is survived by his wife, Georgeanna, daughter Megan (Bryan) Jones of Perry Park, CO, daughter Jennifer Guritz of Denver, CO and grandsons, Brayden and Decker Jones as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Henrietta Guritz, and older brother, Elmer Henry Guritz.
A service will be held at Plum Creek Church, Castle Rock on Tuesday, March 8th, 2022. A time of viewing will be from 12:00-12:30 followed by a memorial service at 12:30 and a light luncheon. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock.
In lieu of flowers, a bank fund has been organized in George’s memory and will be used at the discretion of his family in twofold purpose: Give honor and remembrance to George, donate as seen fit. If you feel moved to give, you can donate into the Canvas Memorial Credit Union. The bank account number is 0100908283 with a routing number of 302075830.
