Mrs. Hazel C. McColley, age 90, passed at her home in Parker, CO, on Hospice Care, March 21, 2019 - just 6 days before her 91st birthday. Family members were at her bedside when she passed.

Hazel grew up in Saugus, Massachusetts. She attended art and design classes at an art school in Boston Mass in the 1940's focusing on Fashion Design. Her passion was drawing and oil painting.

She met her future husband, John W. (Jack) McColley when she was 16 years old in a meat market in Saugus when their dogs' leashes became entwined. Jack was home on leave from the war. He lovingly called her his "skipper" - "Skip" for short. They dated 4 years and married May 18, 1949 in Chula Vista, CA. Together they returned to Mass where they had 3 children: Christine L. (McColley) Kennedy of Centennial, CO; Cynthia E. McColley of Parker, CO; and John D. McColley of No. Reading, Mass.

Hazel and her husband moved to Colorado in 1975, when Jack was transferred with his company. They became founding members of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Englewood, CO (now Centennial). They moved to Parker, CO in the early 1980's where they were part of the early members of St. Mathew's Episcopal Church. Hazel served on the Vestry and Bishop's committees at various times, as well as the Altar Guild, and was a Lay Eucharist Minister. Her husband died at home in Parker, CO in 1985.

Hazel's passion was also serving others, so she started the church's thrift shop in the early 1990's with other volunteers from the congregation, which served the surrounding community for several yrs. She was also a member of "Prayers and Squares", a St. Mathew's ministry of making quilts for the sick. She enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Hazel had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. Hazel and her children had wonderful moments of laughter together in the months prior to her passing.

She is survived by her 3 children, named above, her sister Lois A. Donlan of Saugus, MA, 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren all from New Hampshire and Maine.

A big thank you to all the wonderful people of St. Matthew's who volunteered their time and service for our mother's Memorial/Funeral Service today, as well as the wonderful food reception after. We appreciate everyone's kindness and giving spirit in the remembrance of our mother, Hazel.

Mom was a woman of faith. I found this in her Bible yesterday. I don't think she wrote it, although it is in her hand writing, but think she just didn't write the name of the author.

It reads:

Please don't sing
sad songs for me.
Forget your grief and fears.
For I am in a perfect place,
Away from pain and tears...
I'm far away from hunger,
and hurt or want and pride.
I have a place in heaven
with the Master at my side.
My life on earth was very good,
as earthly lives can go.
But paradise is so much more
than anyone can know...
My heart is filled with happiness,
and sweet rejoicing too.
To walk with God
is perfect peace,
a joy forever new.

We know there is only Love and Grace on the other side,
and Mom is at peace now...
