James Harvey Mason, 90, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025, in Castle Rock, Colorado. Born on January 26, 1935, in Redlands, California, he was the beloved son of Edgar E. and Ida M. (Boring) Mason.
James spent his early years on a ranch in Rubidoux, Riverside County, where he developed a lifelong love for farming, animals, and the outdoors. He remained on the Mason Homestead until 2005, when devastating floods forced the loss of the family home. Throughout his life, he was a pillar of the Riverside community, known for his dedication to service and his deep involvement in the Freemasons. A Past Master of Riverside Lodge #635, James also held leadership roles in the Knights Templar, York Rite, Scottish Rite, and The Shriners. His lifelong commitment to these organizations was recognized in 2019 when he received the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grand York Rite of California.
A graduate of Cal State Fullerton with a degree in business, James began his career by serving his country. He joined the U.S. Navy alongside his closest friend, Jeff Jeffries, and was stationed in Guam. In 1966, he graduated from Officer Candidate School and earned the rank of Ensign. After 12 years of service, he made the difficult decision to leave the Navy to start a family with his beloved wife, Kay. The couple shared more than 58 wonderful years together before her passing in 2021.
James built a successful career as a plant manager at Innerpace Pipe Plant in Corona, California, later transitioning into leadership roles in the polyurethane foam production industry. Yet, his greatest joy came from his time spent outdoors—riding horses, raising cattle, and exploring the mountains. At age 50, he completed his first backpacking trip to Mt. Whitney, an adventure that sparked many more. He cherished camping and fishing trips in the Sierras and had a deep passion for history, enjoying visits to Gettysburg and Washington, D.C.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, James was known for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering kindness. He never met a stranger and welcomed all with a smile and a story to share.
James is survived by his son, Cliff Mason of Beaumont, California; his daughter, Kim Hamsher of Parker, Colorado; his cherished grandchildren, Jacob Hamsher, Ian Hamsher, Alexa Mason, and Halle Mason; and his brother, Kent Fogleman. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kay, his brother Larry Fogleman, and his sister Viola Young.
James leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and adventure. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered as "Pa" by those whose lives he touched.
