October 13, 1936 – June 13, 2026
John Hofford, originally from Worchester, Massachusetts, was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, husband, veteran, and friend. He passed away on June 13, 2026, just 19 days after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 89 years old; though anyone who met him would have guessed he was much younger. People were often surprised to learn his age, frequently estimating him to be in his early seventies. His youthful spirit, quick smile, and zest for life remained with him until the very end.
Born on October 13, 1936, John lived a life marked by service, hard work, humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends.
In November 1953, John proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force. After a few years, he was stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, where he worked as an aircraft electrician before teaching electronics to fellow service members. The first time he flew into Colorado, he knew he had found the place he wanted to call home for the rest of his life. Following his honorable discharge after 14 years, he remained immensely proud of his military service and his country.
After his military service, John built a diverse and successful career. He worked as a salesman, computer programmer, and postal carrier, bringing the same dedication and work ethic to every role he undertook. Long before most people embraced technology, John developed a passion for computers and electronics. He was remarkably computer savvy, enjoyed fixing computers, troubleshooting technical problems, and keeping up with the latest technology. Even into his later years, he amazed family and friends by playing virtual reality games and embracing innovations that many people decades younger found intimidating.
John was a man who could fix anything. Whether it was an appliance, a vehicle, a computer, an electrical problem, or a household project, he always seemed to know exactly what to do. When asked how he learned so many skills, he would simply smile and say he had "just piddled with it." He even has several YouTube videos sharing with others how he fixed things. His ingenuity, curiosity, determination, and willingness to tackle any challenge became hallmarks of his character.
Known for his warm personality and infectious smile, John never met a stranger. He loved making people laugh and was always ready with a joke, including one of his most recent favorite: "What do you call a cold canine? A chili dog." His humor brought joy to countless family gatherings and conversations over the years.
Above all, John loved his family. He was the proud father of three daughters and dedicated himself to raising them to be kind, hardworking, and contributing members of their communities. His guidance, support, and example shaped their lives and continue to influence future generations.
John enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing video poker and keno, and embracing life with enthusiasm and independence. He was a believer in God and lived his faith through kindness, generosity, and the respect he showed to others.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Dr. Jennifer Garza and Lissa Hofford-Hood; son-in-law, Frank Garza; twin granddaughters, Madison Morton and Megan Hood; great-grandson, Robert Strother IV; and siblings, Louis (Wayne) Hofford, Alan Hofford, and Nancy Paquin.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janete Hofford; his cherished daughter, Shelly Hofford; the mother of his 3 children, Margaret Hofford, his siblings, George Hofford, Mary St. Onge, Gail Walkowiak, and James "Butch" Hofford.
John's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, generosity, humor, wisdom, and example. He will be remembered for his ever-present smile, his ability to fix anything, his devotion to family, his pride in serving his country, and his remarkable ability to make others feel welcome and loved.
Although our hearts are heavy with loss, we are grateful for the many years we were blessed to share with him. His love, laughter, and example will remain with us always.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever remembered.
