

Born February 2, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Joyce was the daughter of the late Donald and Edith Bills of Salem, Indiana. She was a 1960 graduate of Salem High School and went on to attend Butler University, graduating in 1964, with a degree in Home Economics. On December 1, 1968, she married John Gifford Black. They resided in Greencastle until moving to Colorado in 2021. Joyce and John shared 55 years of marriage before his passing in 2023.
Joyce enjoyed a long and rewarding career at DePauw University in food service management. Later in life she returned to school to earn her master’s degree from Indiana State University and became a Registered Dietitian for the State of Indiana, where she worked for twelve years before retiring in 2005.
Joyce was a dedicated member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for more than 50 years, where she served in leadership roles including secretary, vice president, and president. After retirement, she became a member of the Red Hat Society and cherished the friendships she made, always looking forward to lunches and social gatherings.
Joyce had a deep love for animals, especially her cats, and she never missed a chance to cheer on her favorite football teams, the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gifford Black, and her parents, Donald and Edith Bills. She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Black (Scott Sheridan) and Jenny Yeager (Michael), as well as her two grandchildren, Vienne and Sam Yeager.
Joyce will be remembered for her kindness, loyalty, and love of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on October 23, 2025, at Hopkins Rector Funeral Home. The family will receive friends and family from 10:00 AM until the time of service, with a reception following the service at the funeral home.
