My father began teaching me early on about how the world worked. He had an opinion about most everything and almost always wove a homey anecdote into the discussion to support his position. As a teenager, I was a recalcitrant learner reasoning that this square, near hillbilly from Missouri couldn’t possibly possess any knowledge that was applicable to my pressing temporal concerns. Of course, he repeated his tiresome discourses throughout my ‘wonder years’ to annoy me and so unrelentingly that I could lip sync them and mimic the gesticulations that punctuated his storytelling.
He managed to successfully imprint his life lessons upon me. As an adult, I grudgingly, then gratefully, learned his observations were virtually always spot on. He was a simple man, who shared simple wisdom. He, for instance, was marvelously unimpressed by your level of education, how you made your living, or what you owned. Instead, he believed the ultimate measure of any man was how he loved and cared for his family. In that regard, he was peerless.
You were a marvel of a man, Dad. I love you.
