Paul Lamont Hess was born a beloved son of Murry and JoAnn Hess. He arrived in the world on April 3,1973 in Hayward, California. His big brother, Michael, and big sister, Brenda, thought he was kind of smelly and lumpy, but he grew on them. (Unlike the other little brother Daniel, who came along later.)
Paul had a lovely childhood full of bike rides, kick-the-can, picnics up Mueller Canyon, wading in City Creek, camping trips, learning to play tennis, posing for many many tree pictures and generally making everyone laugh. He made friends easily and loved his family.
Teenage years brought his strengths into sharp focus. He improved his artistic talents including drawing and singing. He joined and flourished in debate which surprised exactly no one. He enjoyed science and had many quasi-physics discussions with his brother. He had many other talents such as getting his back tickled...a lot, making his sister feel loved, developing a love of the gospel and steamrolling anyone caught lying down on a bed.
Paul served the Lord and the people of the Houston Texas East mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He impacted many lives in those two years including his own as he worked very hard. In a letter to Brenda he said, “The whole key to it is hard difficult work. That's what brings the most blessings and success. Hard difficult work!”
Paul continued to have an impact on the people around him. He was quite successful at his job where he trained and molded many employees many of whom credit their current successes to Paul's mentoring and training.
Paul found someone to share his life with and became a father, a great dream of his, to Scott and later Abby and Jacob. Fatherhood was very important to Paul and he always did his best by his children, even in difficult times.
And there were very difficult times. Paul began to struggle in this life. Other things began to fill his mind and cloud out who he really was. His family who loved him as fiercely, completely and imperfectly as they knew how chooses to remember the Paul from before these difficult times. He was truly a great man, friend, brother and son. We are all the better for having had him in our lives. We love you, Paul.
