Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cecelia Elliss; son Robert Elliss and his wife, Lisa Chrisman-Elliss; daughter Deborah Black and her husband, Darin Black; 3 grand-daughters, Lauren Black, Anna Elliss and Abigail Elliss; 2 grand-sons, Paul Black and Ian Black; 2 step-grand-sons Austin Chrisman and Andre Chrisman; his twin brother Ray Elliss; his sister Rovilla Ellis and step-sister Lois Casey and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is predeceased by his father, John Elliss Jr.; mother Edith Elliss; sister Marie Elliss and brother John Elliss III.
Richard was born in Westphalia, KS on June 7th, 1942 to John and Edith Elliss. After his family moved to Southwestern Colorado, Richard loved the outdoors and became an avid hunter and fisherman. He played baseball and football in High School and graduated from Mancos High School in 1960. After graduation, he went into the Navy and served in the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 (Seabees) until being honorably discharged in 1964. While stationed on Guam, he met and married his wife, Cecelia, where they had their two kids, Robert and Deborah. After having children, Richard enjoyed skiing, traveling around the United States with his family, and spending time with his wife walking on the beach and sailing in Florida.
Richard worked in the telecommunications field for 31 years. He was an avid reader and appreciated a good mystery, action, or western story. Richard was fiercely loyal and delighted in a funny joke. He was known for being a servant and used his skills in wood working, concrete, and mechanics to help others. He also volunteered as a greeter, usher, and assisted where needed at his local church. He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and all who knew him.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00AM on April 14, 2018 at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Castle Rock, CO. Pastor Chris Matthis will officiate. A military burial ceremony will be held directly after at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, CO. Flowers, donations, and condolences may be offered at 550 E.
