Rickey Roy Brewer

Rick was born January 24, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas, and remained a Texan at heart throughout a life that took him through Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, and eventually Colorado. A graduate of TCU, Rick spent much of his career in the grain business, working for Continental and later ConAgra. He also had a brief turn as a real estate agent.

On September 15, 1984, Rick married Patricia “Patti” Brewer. For nearly 42 years, they built a life around family, faith, travel, Sunday church, and playing cards together. Rick loved Patti deeply and was always willing to defer to whatever was best for her, often with a familiar, “Yes, Patti.”

Rick had a deep and enduring Christian faith. He was a member of Journey Church and spent nine years in Bible Study Fellowship. His faith was part of the rhythm of his life and the way he understood the world.

He loved Westerns, playing cards, taking the long way to get somewhere, and anything that satisfied his considerable sweet tooth, particularly lollipops, hard candy, and lemon pie. He coached softball, loved “pulling your leg,” and was quick with a wink and a smile. He liked to say that if you wanted to talk like a Texan, you needed to smile.

Most of all, Rick showed up. He rarely missed a family event and took genuine pleasure in being part of the lives of the people he loved. In recent years, he captured many of his memories in a StoryWorth memoir, leaving his family his stories in his own words.

Rick is survived by his wife, Patricia Brewer; daughters Lynn Akins and her husband, Mike, and Renee Dowis and her husband, Scott; and grandsons Chase and Tyler Dowis.

Rick will be remembered for his deep faith, his devotion to his family, his sense of humor, and that ever-present wink and smile.
