On November 16, 2018, Ann Shirley Whipps (nee Gerhold) passed away as a result of complications from dementia. Shirley – or Miss Shirley, or just plain Shirl, as some knew her – was a woman of many gifts, with a passion for her family that was unequaled. She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.
Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Robert J. Whipps, and is survived by her 6 children, Vickie Jacobs, Robert E. Whipps, Timothy Whipps, Daniel Whipps, Penny Cox, and William Whipps, as well as by her sister, Florence LePore, and her brother, John Gerhold. She was also the proud and loving “Grandmom” to 16 grandchildren, and “Grannymom” to 19 great-grandchildren. To say that she was simply survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, however, would be an understatement. She was, for most of her life, and in almost every way, a true family matriarch, with a heart so big and so full that it could not be contained – so she poured it out in the countless homemade meals she cooked; the seemingly endless cookies, pies and cakes that she baked; and in the birthdays and holidays that she delighted in celebrating. Her family thrived – and, quite literally, grew – on her infectious love and generosity. And her friends, too, knew that she was always there to lend a hand when she could, and to welcome them into her home. Although she is gone from our lives, her spirit lives on.
Family will receive friends at Sterling Ashton Schwab Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Ave., Catonsville, MD 21228 on Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9pm, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 10am. Interment Crestlawn Memorial Gardens.
