Barbara Ann Barrett, affectionately known as BB or Momma, was born on September 21, 1945, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the late Janey Mae Collins. She passed away on June 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.
Growing up in a close-knit family, Barbara was one of six siblings—Raymond, Freddie, Otis, Arstale, and Bazine. She was educated in the Spartanburg County Public School system and demonstrated a strong work ethic from a young age. In search of new opportunities, she relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, where she began her career as a machine operator at Westinghouse Electric Company.
Barbara’s life was enriched when she became a mother to four wonderful children: Vivian, Patricia, Arthur, and Kelvin. For a time, she navigated parenthood as a single mother, showering her children with unconditional love and support. In 1969, Barbara met Donald Eugene Barrett, the love of her life, and together they embarked on a beautiful journey of love and family, ultimately welcoming their youngest son, Donta.
In 1981, Barbara transitioned to the Baltimore City School System as a Food Service Employee, a role she embraced with dedication until her retirement in 2012. That retirement allowed her to fully enjoy life alongside her cherished husband, Donald.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Barbara was known for her welcoming heart. She treated everyone she encountered as if they were family, embodying the essence of unconditional love and compassion. One of her most memorable traits was her ability to give hugs that enveloped loved ones in warmth and affection, making them feel cherished. Barbara had a vibrant spirit and pursued her passions with enthusiasm. She loved visiting Atlantic City and other casinos, while cooking remained a deep-rooted passion. Music was essential to her life; she adored dancing at family gatherings and was particularly fond of the soulful sounds of Aretha Franklin, often requesting her songs at events.
Barbara leaves behind a loving family: her husband, Donald Sr. (who preceded her in death); her children Vivian, Arthur, Donta, Karen, and Donald Jr.; and children, Patricia, Kelvin, Kevin, and Terri, who also preceded her in death. She is survived by her son-in-law Thomas Reynolds, daughters-in-law Bheti Cheeks and Deborah Barrett, as well as ten grandchildren: Shaniqua, Shantia, James, Christian, Shamaria, Lavonda, Sharonda, Barbara Anne, Shakira and Noah. Additionally, she cherished her host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Barbara Ann Barrett will be remembered not just for her roles as a mother, wife, and friend, but for her unwavering spirit of generosity and love that touched the lives of many. Her kindness and joyful presence will be deeply missed but will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
