

Harold R. Madtes of Crownsville completed his earthly sojourn on Tuesday July 8, eleven days short of his 95th birthday. He was born at home in North Wales, PA, the youngest of 6 children born to Horace S. Madtes, Sr and Christina (Steinhauer) Madtes.
He graduated from North Wales High School in 1948 and enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War Era, stationed in Germany. His detachment was involved in military intelligence. After serving 3 years in the Army he was recruited by the National Security Agency as a cryptologist intercepting transmissions and decoding messages of the adversaries of the United States. He was stationed around the world in locations that included Turkey, Pakistan, Japan and Canada. He spent 20 years on assignment, retiring after his final tour at both the Pentagon and Fort Meade.
At the age of 45 he enjoyed several avocations in retirement, among them traveling, being masterful at fly tying for freshwater fishing and also being a 1st mate on a day fishing boat Kappa II based in Annapolis. He also enjoyed woodworking and also took numerous fishing trips with former colleagues and family at locations that ranged from Pickerel Bay, Canada to the Chesapeake Bay and Washington State.
A life long bachelor, he never married and is the last family member of his generation. He has 6 nieces and nephews living in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Washington State.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #7 and the Annapolis Moose Lodge #296 where he was well received by all.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville.
