

James B. Culp, Sr. passed away peacefully on July 13, 2013 at Charlestown Retirement Community at the age of 92. He was born in Baltimore on March 3, 1921 and was the son of the late Harry G. and Elizabeth D. Culp. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years,
Norma E. Culp, who died in 2005.
James was a graduate of both Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Maryland Institute College of Art. In addition to being a talented graphic artist he spent a successful career of 45 years with the Koppers Company as a Mechanical Engineer working with components of high compression engines and compressors. He wrote a handbook on Piston Ring and Seal Design that is still in use today. James was also a member of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers and held a P.E. license throughout most of his career.
James spent more than 13 years as a Scout Leader of Cub Pack 456 at St. Mark’s Church in Catonsville. He enjoyed being Cub Master of many of today’s baby boomers.
James was a U.S. Veteran and proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Sixth Armored Division under General George Patton and following the D-Day campaign was in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.
He is survived by four sons, James B. Jr. (wife Susan), Ronald F. (wife Marjorie), Clark T. (wife Brenda) and Thomas M. (wife Linda); also eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass for the Celebration of James’s Life will be held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, where he was an active member for more than fifty five years, at a later date.
