John Edward Casson, of Baltimore, MD, died peacefully on February 23, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 6, 1921 in Claiborne, MD, and moved to Easton as a young boy. He was the son of the late Ida May Davis Casson and Edward Russell Casson.
Mr. Casson graduated from Easton High School in 1938 and then attended an aeronautical engineering technical school in California. He returned from California and worked as a technician for Martin Marietta prior to enlisting in the United States Navy at the beginning of World War II. During the war, he worked on various aircraft projects in the United States.
After the end of World War II, he enrolled at the University of Maryland and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1950. He began his career as an engineer for Koppers, and spent the majority of his career at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, from which he retired in 1989. At Westinghouse, he was a mechanical engineer who was part of the team that designed the AWG10 airborne radar for the F4 aircraft. He spent a large part of his career working on classified programs that to this day are still highly sensitive.
On December 29, 1956, he married Elfreda Bergmann, a childhood friend from Claiborne, in Baltimore, MD. They had one son, John Edward Casson, Jr., who was born October 20, 1957. He was predeceased by both his son in 1979 and his wife in 2003.
Mr. Casson is survived by his brother, Donald (Sara Lou) Casson of Easton, MD; nieces Sue Anne (Ken) Robinson of Vienna, VA, Cynthia (Bill) Morton of Newton Centre, MA, and Leslie (Craig) Stevens of Alexandria, VA; nephews Donald (Kim) Casson of Reston, VA and Richard (Anne) Casson of New York, NY; 12 grandnieces and grandnephews; 5 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephew; and many loyal friends. In addition to his parents and his beloved wife and son, he was predeceased by his sisters Margaret Hope Casson, Elinor Russell Casson, and Nina Casson Miller.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012, at the Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc. Friends are invited to call from 10:00 to 12:00 and the service will immediately follow. Internment to be private.
