

Leo "Lee" Elmer Hayes, 87, passed away at home in Abingdon, MD on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Born April 14, 1924, Leo was born and raised, along with 8 brothers and sisters, in Marriottsville, Maryland. His parents were Ethel and John Hayes. All brothers and sisters are predeceased. Leo was a member of the Army during World War II. He served in the World War II, and was in several noted battles including the Battle of the Bulge. While serving in World War II in Germany, Leo received a Purple Heart for being wounded in combat. Following his military service, he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world including St. Petersburg, Russia. He lived the majority of his life in Baltimore, MD before moving to Abingdon, MD in 2000.
He was survived by niece Sharleen Callahan; great-niece Patricia Davis and her husband Richard; great nephew Stephen Callahan, his wife Rebecca and their daughters Emma and Molly and multiple nieces and nephews located across the United States
Relative and friends are invited to call at the STERLING ASHTON SCHWAB WITZKE FUNERAL HOME OF CATONSVILLE, INC., 1630 Edmondson Ave, Catonsville, MD on Tuesday, December 6th from 3:00PM - 5:00PM and 7:00PM - 9:00PM, where Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 7th at 11:00AM. Leo will be laid to rest at the Mountain View Cemetery in Marriottsville, MD.
