

Lewis C. Hibbs, Sr. , 96, went to be with his Savior on February 16, 2026 at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Westminster, MD. He was born on August 26, 1929 in Newtown, PA to Maud and S. Willet Hibbs, Sr. Lew graduated from Council Rock High School in 1947 and immediately enlisted into the United States Marine Corps.
While stationed at Annapolis, MD Lew met his sweetheart, Elizabeth (Betty) Hibbs. They were married on January 9, 1954 and enjoyed 63 years of marriage before her passing on February 14, 2016. They had two children, Karen Ann Covino (husband Steve) and Lewis C. Hibbs, Jr. As a family, they moved around the East Coast as Lew was stationed at different Marine bases.
Lew served in the Korean War and also spent a year stationed at Okinawa. He loved being a Marine and retired in 1968 after serving 21 years. After retirement, the family moved to Baltimore, MD and Lew worked for the State of Maryland as a supply chief in Jessup, MD.
In their later years, Betty and Lew were very active and volunteered at the Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109, where Lew was commander two times and a member of the 27 Flags. When they moved to Sykesville, they also joined the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department and volunteered at many fundraising events, including Friday Night Bingo. He is a member of Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church and attended regularly when his health allowed.
Lew was a kind and patient man who loved God, his country and his family. Wherever he lived, he found a church for his family to attend. He was very dedicated to his family and would do anything for them.
In addition to his children, Lew is survived by four grandchildren: Michael Covino, Robert (Bobby) Covino and his wife Jessica, Lewis C. Hibbs, III and Abigail Hibbs, and three great-grandchildren: Callie Covino, Quinn Covino, and Elias Covino.
He also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Ethel Hibbs and Anna Mae Leek, and several nieces, nephews and friends. Lew was predeceased by his brother, S. Willet Hibbs, Sr. and his brother-in-law, Wilbert Leek.
Friends and family are invited to Sterling, Ashton, Schwab, Witzke Funeral Home, 1630 Edmondson Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228 on Monday, February 23, 2026 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. There will be an American Legion service at 7 PM. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at the funeral home with his pastor, Rev. YuJung Hwang, officiating. Burial will be at Lorraine Park Cemetery on Dogwood Road.
Friends and family attending his funeral service are encouraged to wear red, white and/or blue to honor his Marine Corp service. You may also remember Lew by drinking a Coors Light or enjoying a bowl of ice cream.
