Your Single Thread of Gold
(to Nan)

There is more love within this room
Than any heart could ever hold;
For you have given each of us
An elemental part of you.
Like pieces of this family cloth,
Our lives are all connected
By your single thread of gold.

All without a book to go by,
All without a pattern near,
Seamlessly you've sown the seconds,
Matched the minutes,
Patched the hours.
You've mended days with perfect stitches;
Clothed our years in all your finest;
Closed the gaps to fight the cold.
You've held this family close together
With your single thread of gold.

Now we wrap our love around you.
For you have made this brilliant quilt.
Held together with your spirit,
Strong and endless,
Fine and gilt.
Now we blanket you with "Thank You."
Now you be warmed with truth be told---
Always we will all be strengthened
By your single thread of gold.
