OBITUARY
Lucy Blake Rodgers
March 25, 1924 – November 23, 2017
Lucy Blake Rodgers, nee Royce, was born March 25, 1924 in Chelsea, Vermont. After high school, she worked as a secretary for the state highway department. She met her future husband, Glen E. Rodgers, at a church where she played piano. They were married on March 7, 1951 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Much of Lucy’s life involved supporting her husband who was a minister and chaplain. Their household grew to include three boys, and Glen’s mother, Mary. They lived on many bases in the U.S. and spent two years in Japan. Upon retirement, she and her husband lived in Baltimore, Maryland.
Lucy was a wonderful mother and grandmother, a fantastic cook, known for her fried chicken, pot roast, cakes, and spritz cookies. She enjoyed bird watching, cats, singing, and playing piano, one of the few talents her ten-year battle with dementia did not affect. Lucy was patient, gentle and kind, and always had a beautiful smile on her face, even when her husband introduced her by her nickname, “Rabbit.” To know Lucy was to love her. She will be dearly missed. Blessed be her memory.
Lucy is survived by her children, Charles (Margaret) Rodgers, Frank (Vicki) Rodgers, and John (Margie) Rodgers; her grandchildren Grant, Brittany, Devin, and Jessye; great grandchildren Preston and Grace; her brothers William and Rufus, and sister Winifred. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Glen, and her brother Harry.
A funeral service will be held at St. Matthews United Church of Christ, 3400 Norman Ave., Baltimore, MD on Saturday, January 13 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at 10AM, Wednesday, January 17. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimers Association, alz.org.
