The comments already provided sum up what most of us felt about Manny.  He was a man who volunteered to help others, time and again.

Someone once asked me who my role model was, who I'd like to be.  I guess they thought I'd pick some sports figure, and were shocked when I said I wanted to be like Manny Torres, the best human being I knew, a man who was kind, considerate and compassionate.

I met Manny in 1982, when I went to work in the SSA computer center on a special project. Manny and others welcomed me, and lifelong friendships were formed. 

We would go to a local watering hole every Friday for a few beers and some happy hour food. People came and went in the group, but Manny was a constant. He'd often leave early, as he worked many Saturday mornings installing new software, a task no one else wanted. When he wasn't working on a Saturday, he'd try to go to his place in Ocean Pines.

His friendship meant a lot. He helped us move into our new house and I could never properly repay him. He'd always greet me with a  "Hey, Mr Mike!" and I'd respond with a "hey, Taco Torres!"

We drifted apart after retirement, as the Friday night routine faded away, but he'd look me up periodically for lunch or a few drinks. I went to see Manny in St Agnes 2 weeks ago, and we had a good conversation, talking about the old times and our medical conditions. 

Before I left, he asked me to take a selfie with him. That evening, he texted me to say that my visit had made his day! Small recompense for a man who had made my day (and others' day) so many times.

Rest in peace, Manny Manu! I am a better person for having known you. If love could die along with death this life wouldn't be so hard.

Manny really was a very special person.  I saw a quote:  "Be the things you loved most about the people who are gone."  If we could all be more like Manny, the world would be full of people with integrity, kindness, a sense of humor, honesty, genuineness--the world would be a much better place.  Seeing him at work always brightened my day and I loved his laugh.  May he rest in peace.  He will be missed by so many.

I first met Manny many years ago when he came to the NCC building. We shared a partition separating our cubicles, and got to know each other as coworkers and friends. If asked to describe Manny with one word it would be “Kind”, one of the kindest people I ever met. He was also very funny, smart and extremely dedicated to his work. We shared a love of animals and I remember him rescuing birds that somehow found their way to 5th floor NCC but then panicked as there was no escape. He used his coat to catch them mid-flight, and then released them to freedom outside. He also took charge of the under-appreciated task of managing the group coffee setup on our floor. We had many laughs about that job! I will miss Manny very much,  and will always consider him one of my very best friends!

Manny was a wonderful person and colleague, that I'll truly miss. I'm so lucky to have had the pleasure to know him as well as having the opportunity working with him. He'll always be remembered for his work ethics and as a  great team player. He welcomed me to SSA with open arms from day one, and I'll forever be grateful for that. I amire him for his unselfishness and willingness to help at anytime; by sharing his knowledge, lending a ear to making my day easier. I know he felt the same. 
He was very dedicated, and I can truly say that I learned a lot from him. When he retired I missed him and the phone calls on Saturday mornings I would randomly get. If he wasn't working, you could bet he would be headed to Ocean City for relaxation. I'll miss you "Manny". Rest in peace my friend. God bless 🙏🙏

The world is now a sadder place.  Most decent person I have ever met.   Had the pleasure of knowing & working with Manny for 20+ years.  Thanks for being who you were.  RIP Manu

I worked with Manny many years ago.  He was my mentor when I came to Systems.  He was one of the kindest, and smartest people I’ve ever met.  He had great patience, never made me feel that I was annoying him with my questions.  He also had a great sense of humor.  He will be greatly missed by many of us who have fond memories of him.   I will keep Manny and his family in my prayers.

I’ve known Manny for 25 years in all those years he’s been my best friend And he will surely will be missed.
